Bruleed grapefruit is just an ordinary grapefruit that’s been topped with brown sugar and then torched to crispy, caramelly burnt sugar perfection. It’s easily one of the most impressive (yet effortless) breakfast or brunch dishes that you can serve at your morning breakfast table. All you need is two ingredients and a kitchen torch. You can settle for oven broiler, of course, if you don’t have a torch on hand.
Previously, I had never been one to put sugar on my grapefruit. That is until I found out you could torch it, of course. Any excuse to break out the kitchen torch, am I right?
The best part is tapping your spoon to break the crunchy, sugary crust. Almost as satisfying as breaking into a creme brulee; but let’s fact it, grapefruit is not creme brulee. If creme brulee is what you’re looking for, check out my recipe here for Blood Orange Creme Brulee.
- 2 grapefruits, halved
- 4 TB brown sugar
- Cut each grapefruit in half and use a paring knife to separate each segment from the rind. Use a paper towel to blot any juice from the top of the grapefruit.
- Sprinkle each half evenly with one tablespoon of brown sugar. Use a kitchen torch to evenly melt all of the sugar until golden and bubbly.
- If you do not have access to a kitchen torch, place grapefruit on a baking sheet and use a broiler on high for 3-5 minutes or until sugar is melted and begins to bubble. Check often to avoid burning.
I, too, will take any excuse to break out the kitchen torch! I love how simple this is, and I also love grapefruit. I can’t wait to give it a try!
We couldn’t agree more, Coley! Can’t wait to hear how it turns out for you!
Sadly I don’t have a kitchen torch–but I am totally trying this recipe this weekend with my broiler! Thanks for the inspiration.
